L22 / photometry guide

What is spectral distribution?

A spectral distribution shows how radiant energy is distributed with wavelength. It is an optical fingerprint of a light source.

The spectrum of light

Spectral power distribution describes radiant power within wavelength intervals. In the visible range, its shape affects perceived colour, colour rendering and photometric quantities. A spectrum alone is not a single quality rating for a source.

Measurement with a spectrometer

A spectrometer separates radiation into spectral components and records them with a detector. Results depend on input geometry, spectral range and resolution, calibration and signal level. The spectrometer is an L22 solution for spectral measurement and photometry.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is spectral distribution?

It is the dependence of a radiometric quantity, such as radiant power, on wavelength.

Can sources with the same colour have different spectra?

Yes. Different spectral distributions can produce a similar colour sensation under defined viewing conditions.
